Final Week Matchups

Posted by Noah on August 29, 2005

Joel says that everyone likes to see standings; since everyone but tier 3 is in playdowns, we don't really have standings for them, but here are the matchups for the final week and what they mean:

Tier 1

Tier 2

Tier 3

Ultimate in Kingston High Schools

Posted by Noah on August 22, 2005

Although there is a thriving ultimate program in some Kingston-area elementary schools, it hasn't yet been established in high schools. There are a few teachers in the league who are interested in putting together an inter-school ultimate program, but they need teachers at other schools to become involved. So if you're a teacher at a school other than Bayridge and Sydenham, and you'd like to help get an ultimate league going among area high schools, please let us know in the forum.

Fall League

Posted by Noah on August 22, 2005

Some people have expressed an interest in a fall league, running from the beginning of September until mid- to late-October. I've started a forum thread called "Fall League" -- if you'd be interested in playing in this league, please let us know there.

We'll need about 50 people in order to go ahead with it.

The other challenge is going to be finding fields. If you have any ideas for fields, please let us know.

Round 3 Schedule

Posted by Noah on August 13, 2005

Round 3 will last for three weeks, which takes us to the end of August and the end of the season. The ranking going in to round 3 is:

Tier 1

  1. Def Leppard Fan Club
  2. Los Tigres
  3. Immortal Wombat
  4. red devils
  5. Queen's PHE
  6. OH-SNAP!!!!
  7. FlamingHoes
  8. Channel 11

Tier 2

  1. Serene Green
  2. Charcool
  3. Molotov Cocktail
  4. Gold
  5. Score-o-matics
  6. Keysters
  7. Tenacious 'bees
  8. Green Meanies

Tier 3

  1. The Mother Huckers
  2. Albino Seals
  3. RYATT aka Purple Nurples
  4. TRANSFORMERS

Tier 3 will play a round-robin for three weeks to determine their final ranking. Tiers 1 and 2 will each play quarters, semis, and finals as follows:

Week 1

  1. 1 vs. 8
  2. 2 vs. 7
  3. 3 vs. 6
  4. 4 vs. 5

Week 2

  1. Winner of week 1 game 1 vs. winner of week 1 game 4
  2. Winner of week 1 game 2 vs. winner of week 1 game 3
  3. Loser of week 1 game 1 vs. loser of week 1 game 4
  4. Loser of week 1 game 2 vs. loser of week 1 game 3

Week 3

  1. Winner of week 2 game 1 vs. winner of week 2 game 2
  2. Loser of week 2 game 1 vs. loser of week 2 game 2
  3. Winner of week 2 game 3 vs. winner of week 2 game 4
  4. Loser of week 2 game 3 vs. loser of week 2 game 4

If you're in tier 3, all your games have been scheduled already; they may be early or late, but they're all on field 3; you can see them on the schedule and results page. If you're in tier 1 or 2, your games can only be scheduled one week at a time because each week's schedule depends on the previous week's results. However, to help you to schedule your time, all the tier 1 games will be at 5:30, and all the tier 2 games will be at 6:55.

Captains, please get your scores in as soon as possible following your games, so that we can get the following week's schedule up.

Because it's getting dark earlier, it's important that games start on time. For 5:30 games, please try to be there around 5:15, and start right at 5:30. Also, first round games should end no later than 6:50, except under special circumstances as set out on the rules page.

Finally, we're going to ask the tier 3 teams to look after setting up and tearing down fields 3, 4, and 5 during round 3. We'll get them set up for August 17, then:

Remember that this is only for fields 3, 4 and 5. We'll deal with fields 1 and 2 separately.

The advantage to doing it this way is that we don't have to hand the cones off each week, because whoever tears the fields down one week is setting them up the following week.

If you have any questions, or you think I've made a mistake somewhere, please let me know.

More Weather

Posted by Noah on August 10, 2005

Sorry to clog your inbox . . .

If the storm is still around when games are set to start in half an hour, here's what I think we should do:

A little rain is fine to play in. Heavy rain is not, more for the sake of the fields than that of the players. Don't play if there's thunder and lightning, and please stay away from trees and the fence.

If the situation changes, I'll send more info.

Ranking for Crossover Games

Posted by Noah on August 8, 2005

Sorry for the delay getting the schedule up for this week. Captains, please try to insert your scores as soon as possible following your games so that we can get to work on the following week's schedule.

Anyway, here's the ranking we're using for crossover games, starting with the team ranked fifth (because teams one through four don't play crossovers):

5. Queen's PHE
6. OH-SNAP!!!!
7. FlamingHoes
8. Channel 11
9. Serene Green
10. Charcool
11. Molotov Cocktail
12. Gold
13. Score-o-matics
14. Keysters
15. Tenacious 'bees
16. The Mother Huckers
17. Green Meanies
18. Albino Seals
19. RYATT aka Purple Nurples
20. TRANSFORMERS

If you think I've made a mistake anywhere, please let me know.

Weather

Posted by Noah on August 3, 2005

Although it's sunny right now, Kingston's under a severe thunderstorm watch.

If there's thunder and lightning while you're playing this evening, the game should be suspended immediately, and you should clear the field. It's up to the captains to decide whether or not to stick around and wait for the storm to pass in order to resume the game afterwards. If you do decide to resume playing, make sure that the storm has completely passed.

Round 2 Schedule

Posted by Noah on July 25, 2005

Here's a long, tedious explanation of how round 2 works, and why we're doing it this way, for anyone who's interested.

First of all, in order to understand how and why round 2 works, you need to understand round 3, which is the playoffs. Round 3 will take place over three weeks (Aug 17, 24, and 31). Teams will be divided into three tiers: two tiers of eight teams each (tiers 1 and 2), and a tier of four teams (tier 3). Tiers 1 and 2 will each play quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals in order to determine places 1 through 8 (tier 1) and 9 through 16 (tier 2). Tier 3 will play a round-robin to determine places 17 through 20.

So that leaves us with three weeks for round 2, and with the following goals:

  1. make sure that teams end up in the right tier for round 3; although we'd like to have everyone accurately ranked going into round 3, it's most important that they be in the right tier; so, for example, it's not too big a deal if teams #9 and #10 are ranked incorrectly re: each other, but it is a big deal if teams #8 and #9 are ranked incorrectly, since they'll end up in the wrong tiers for round 3
  2. have teams play games that are competitive and meaningful
  3. make sure that every team has (or had) a chance to finish in first place overall, regardless of where they were ranked to start the season; the ranking at the beginning of the season was pretty random, and pretty wrong, according to the results of round 1; we wanted to make sure that a team ranked #20 at the start of the season could theoretically make it in to tier 1 and win round 3

To begin round 2, teams will be divided into five tiers of four teams each, based on their records in round 1. So these tiers look like this:

Tier 1
----------
1. Los Tigres
2. Immortal Excrement
3. Def Leppard Fan Club
4. red devils

Tier 2
----------
5. OH-SNAP!!!!
6. Queens PHE
7. FlamingHoes
8. Channel 11

Tier 3
----------
9. Molotov Cocktail
10. Gold
11. Serene Green
12. Charcool

Tier 4
----------
13. Keysters
14. Score-o-matics
15. The Mother Huckers
16. Tenacious 'bees

Tier 5
----------
17. RYATT aka Purple Nurples
18. TRANSFORMERS
19. Green Meanies
20. Albino Seals

Tier 1 will play a round-robin for ranking going in to round 3. All games will be on field 5, but the games may be early (5:30) or late (6:55) so please check the schedule ahead of time (all games are scheduled already). Because they're playing a round-robin, standings actually matter for tier 1, so tier 1 standings appear on the website. Standings aren't relevant for anyone else.

Each of the other tiers (2 through 5) play playdowns within that tier for the first two weeks of round 2. The first week, the top-ranked team in the tier plays the last ranked team in that tier, and the second-ranked team plays the third-ranked team. The second week, the winners and losers from the first week play off (within the same tier). This will result in a new ranking for each of these four tiers after two weeks. This is particularly important for tier 3, which includes teams that have never played each other, because they were in different tiers during round 1.

After the new ranking has been created, everyone in tiers 2 through 5 will play a crossover game for ranking going in to round 3. So:

The exact same thing will happen between tiers 4 and 5. In each case, the winner of the game will take over the ranking of the higher-ranked team going in, and the loser will take the ranking of the lower-ranked team going in. So, for example, if the second-ranked team in tier 3 (ranked #10 overall) beats the third-ranked team in tier 2 (ranked #7 overall), the two teams exchange their overall rankings going into round 3.

All round 2 games for teams in tiers 2 and 3 will be at 6:55, but the field and opponent will depend on the results of the previous week, so they can not be scheduled in advance. All round 2 games for teams in tiers 4 and 5 will be at 5:30, but again the field and opponent will depend on the results of the previous week, so they can not be scheduled in advance.

Pictures

Posted by Noah on July 8, 2005

I finally got around to adding pictures to the site. They're all from last year, though.

If you have any good pictures, we're always looking for new ones (send them to noah@kingstonultimate.ca). If you want to send some pics at this point, since we've already got a few, I'd prefer if you'd pick out the best two or three that you have and just send those. I can't guarantee that we'll use all the pictures we get, but we'll do what we can.

If we have enough good pictures, we'll probably look at putting up a photo gallery at some point.
